UK-based UBM, through its UBM Asia division, has expanded even further in the Asia-Pacific Region, buying two trade shows and forming a joint venture to develop another one. Also, in the United States, UBM added onto its aviation division with another purchase. The Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International has decided to extend its MEET brand to all of its 2012 events and will kick the series off with HSMAI’s MEET Mid-America April 3-4 at Navy Pier in Chicago. Alan Steel, a 30-year veteran of the trade show industry, has been named president and CEO of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center of New York. Steel is replacing Gerald T. McQueen, the center’s leader for the past 14 years, who resigned in October and stayed in his post until a successor was found. General service contractor Shepard Exposition Services has changed its ownership structure and now allows qualified employees to take part in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, known as an ESOP. In order to qualify, employees need to be full-time or part-time, working a minimum of 1.000 hours per year. Shepard has 438 qualified employees and offices that operate in 10 markets across the United States. The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) reported record results for the financial year ended 31st December 2011. The number of events held at KLCC in 2011 increased 15% year-on-year rising from 1,167 events to 1,346. A total of 1.7 million delegates and visitors attended events at KLCC last year, which the venue estimates created an economic impact of US$217 million in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia last year. Exhibition organisers, VNU Exhibitions Asia and MMI (Shanghai), subsidiary of Messe München International, have signed an agreement to cooperate on the hosting of Green Building China (GBC 2012). MMI Shanghai will act in a supporting role to GBC, a flagship event of VNU, and will be held from 26th to 29th March at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. GBC attracted over 2,000 exhibitors in its 2011 edition, and is expected to cover around 200,000 m2 of exhibition space.
