The Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Industry Association had good news to announce during its June 17 Annual General Meeting: the number of trade exhibitions, visitors, exhibiting companies and showfloor space all showed increases, some with double-digit percentages. In 2010, more than 648,000 visitors from outside of Hong Kong attended trade exhibitions, representing an increase of more than 13 percent from 2009. U.K.-based United Business Media bought a 70-percent stake in the Catersource Conference & Trade Show and sister show Event Solutions on behalf of UBM Live for $5 million. Catersource services the catering industry, and Event Solutions services the event planning industry. Catersource will become part of UBM Live, adding to UBM Live’s portfolio of events serving the Food & Leisure industries both in the United States and internationally. Capitalizing on the success of Mexico as a burgeoning medical tourism destination, the First National Congress of Medical Tourism will launch in Cancun and Rivera Maya next year. Medan, the largest city on the Indonesian island of Sumatra is reportedly in the process of establishing the Medan Convention Bureau. The convention and visitor’s bureau (CVB) will help promote the domestic and regional MICE market on Sumatra. The Medan Municipal Government is reportedly in the process of establishing a board for the CVB as well as securing funding for the bureau. The IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center has secured the hosting and organising of more trade shows at the Bangkok venue, following last month’s announcement of a partnership agreement with Germany-based Messe München International for the strategic cooperation to organise CONSTECH 2011. Business-to-business e-commerce platform, Alibaba.com, held an offline sourcing event in Mumbai earlier this month. The event was held June 1-2 and reportedly attracted more than 200 Indian suppliers registered on the company’s online sourcing website. The two-day event consisted of a seminar on the first day featuring panel discussions, networking and Q&A sessions.
